The Roosevelt girls’ and boys’ basketball teams are gearing up for what coaches believe could be their strongest season yet. With key returning players, fresh talent, and months of intense preparation, both squads are ready to make a statement on the court.
The boys’ team, led by Coach Donnie, has been silently growing over the years, and is coming off of a solid season. They have their sights set on a deep playoff run, and Returning captain Calvin Peterson says the team’s chemistry is at an all-time high. “This year could be one of the best seasons we’ve had,” Peterson said. “We have stronger players, and over the summer we really bonded as a program. We’re confident and determined in our goal to make it to state this year.”
On the other side of the spectrum, The girls’ team, coming from a fresh team-restart last year, has a hopeful new group of young players, ready to face and overcome adversity. The girls had a History-making season in 2023-2024, where a powerful and experienced group of seniors led their team to state—for the first time in school history—crushing expectations as well as being a symbol and representation for city schools. Since that season, our girls team has been rebuilding and looking for that spark again.
Both teams have been training since early fall, holding daily practices and weekend scrimmages to sharpen their skills. Coaches emphasize the importance of commitment, reminding players that success—on the court and in life—comes from hard work and dedication.
No matter how the season unfolds, one thing is clear: Roosevelt is ready to compete, to inspire, and to make their growing city school proud.
The first games for both teams tip off in three weeks, giving fans their first chance to see whether these bold preseason expectations will become reality.
