Up until recently Minneapolis Roosevelt didn’t have girls golf. This wasn’t due to the lack of having a program or equipment, there simply just wasn´t girls to make a team. There had been one in the past, but because of a lack of interest the team dried up and became non-existent until recent years. Things would stay this way for roughly a 34 year window. More specifically, the inactive period was around 1991–2023. Things would go on to change during the 2023 golf season when the team fielded its first female golfers in years, with a focus on building for the future. But what exactly does that future hold?
Currently the 2026 girls golf team is making history on the course. Though the team is small, being only 6 people, they continue to hold themselves strong against the other Minneapolis public schools. On April 23rd 2026, these girls would go on to win 1st place at the Minneapolis City Meet. Not only is this a huge accomplishment but they also beat longtime Roosevelt rival schools including Southwest and Washburn. Individually, juniors Ellie Hugener and Signe Boler both tied for the first place spot each shooting a 50 on 9 holes. Even more recently on May 13th 2026, Summer Newgard individually placed first while playing at the Fort Snelling course where she scored a 51 on 9 holes. Even with this success the girls express that they have many goals for the future. They are driven in continuing to grow their skills and our program.
The Teddy girls continue to reshape what it means to be a girl in golf. They value bonding before meets and uplifting each other on the course. In a sport that is usually calm and collected they sure bring the energy, while still being motivated and precise.

When talking to the girls about their experiences on the team, joy radiates through their answers. Many of the girl golfers and others are actively trying to pave their way in a traditionally male dominated sport. When asked the question “How are you all working to create a team culture that is uniquely yours?” Signe Boler responds by saying “We are creating our own culture and female golf community by forming bonds with other girl´s golf teams.” She also talks about how her and her teammate’s main goal is to have fun even while breaking stereotypes about golf and what it means to be a girl in the sport.
Overall the girls golfers here at Roosevelt are very proud to get to be a part of the future of RHS golf. They also take a lot of pride in their role as the female group that is currently paving the way for future athletes.
