Sam Hinman has offically engraved her name into the history of Minneapolis Roosevelt High School wrestling after a standout performance at the Minnesota State Wrestling Tournament that occurred near the end of February. Competing at 136 pounds, she placed 5th in the state, becoming the first female wrestler in program history to earn All-State honors.
Her achievement carries even greater significance for Roosevelt, as Hinman is also the school’s first state placer in 26 years. In a sport where recognition for female athletes is often limited, her accomplishment represents both a personal victory as well as a meaningful step forward for girls wrestling.
Sam battled through a tough six match bracket, winning four against top competition to secure her place among the state’s best. She finishes her senior season with an 82–30 record, capping off a dominant year filled with multiple tournament titles across different weight classes.
But Sam’s run also did something bigger than medals and records… it put Roosevelt wrestling on the map. Representing a smaller city school that is often overlooked and counted out, she proved that talent and determination aren’t limited to powerhouse programs. Her success challenges the idea of Roosevelt as an underdog and brings well overdue recognition to a program that has quietly been building toward this moment.
Beyond the statistics and titles, Hinman’s success is helping to shift the conversation around women in athletics. At a time when girls’ sports still fight for equal attention and respect, her achievements bring well earned visibility to female wrestlers and inspire the next generation to step onto the mat with confidence.
As she wraps up her senior year, Sam leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond wins and placements. She has set a new standard for excellence at Roosevelt and opened doors for future athletes to follow. Her name will remain in the record books, as well as the Hall of Fame here at Roosevelt, but her influence will be felt long after her final match and stance on that podium.
You are forever a part of #TeddyNation Sam!
