Did you know that the person with the awesome mustache and who greets you every time you get food is Roosevelt’s Senior Coordinator of the cafeteria?
Scott Hilstad has been Senior Coordinator for the past 12 out of 13 years and he’s been working in kitchens for about 20 years. He is in charge of all that goes on with the food and he makes sure that everyone who gets food during the day is able to get it successfully.
Fun fact: his mom was also a Senior Coordinator like he is. Around the same time she retired, his dad had recently died (not fun fact) and Scott found his place at Roosevelt (fun fact). The place he was working before didn’t provide as much stability as he was looking for in retirement, so he came here. It wasn’t something he was expecting, but he’s glad he found it.
There are many things that go on in the day of the Senior Coordinator. Scott says that, “there are always something that happens, everyday there is a new challenge, … like a certain delivery won’t show up, and you gotta make an adjustment here and an adjustment there, or somebody
calls out sick.” “It’s never boring, I can tell you that.”
Scott likes every aspect of his job, except the part where he has to wake up at 4 in the morning. Otherwise, he likes working in kitchens as well as the interactions with the students and fellow co-workers. One time, the district had him move the Nutrition Center for a year, but he decided to come back to this job because “he missed the fun interactions with students… and wanted to get back to it”, according to Scott. He also says that he receives a lot of fist bumps.
As of now, he enjoys watching cricket, travelling, hanging out and cooking for his 2 kids.
