Last year was a huge stepping stone not only for Roosevelt, but for the entire state of Minnesota. Girls flag football officially began across the state, meaning almost
every school was starting a program for the first time EVER. Because of that, the season felt like the beginning of a new community. Teams were learning the sport together, building programs from the ground up, and creating a new space for athletes to both compete and connect.
Over here at Roosevelt, the first season, coached by Marquise Bowie and Rashane Bryant, was about learning and growing as a team. Players had to figure out positions, understand the strategy of the game, and develop teamwork on the field. Even with those challenges, the Teddies finished with a 4–4 record, showing they could compete with other schools right away.
The team also picked up some impressive wins against conference opponents, including victories over South High School and Washburn High School. Those games helped build confidence and showed the potential the program has moving forward.
One of the unique parts of Roosevelt’s team is how many athletes come from different sports within the school. Players bring different strengths from track, basketball, soccer, softball, and countless other athletic programs, which helps create a fast, competitive team on the field. Now that the program has a year of experience, the focus is shifting. Instead of just learning the sport, the team is aiming to improve, compete at a higher level, and keep growing the program. With more understanding of the game and stronger chemistry between teammates, Roosevelt is ready to take the next step.
With a full season behind them and a new one about to begin, Roosevelt’s girls flag football team is ready to build on the foundation they started and make year two even stronger.
